$5 bet
On the drive home from church on Sunday, Adam caught KP eating his boogers.
Every time he catches one of the kids eating their boogers he tells them that they’ll get worms. Which always makes me bristle…I mean REALLY, eating boogers gives you worms??? Come on!
So I called him out, in the car, in front of the kids. Since I was going that far, I though I would try to divide the family. You know, see who is on my side of the booger/worm question. So I put the bet out there, $5 dollars to dad if he is right.
And so it started.
Who wants in with mom? Who thinks mom is right? Boogers don’t give you worms. SILENCE.
Who thinks dad is right? Who thinks eating your boogers give you worms? All hands go up, chanting starts, DAD…DAD…DAD.
So when we got home, we Googled it.
Please post your comment before you look at the answer.

This morning started differently than most. I was going to leave the house before most of the clan today. I needed to get to my dad’s chemo appointment and Adam was going to be the one who walked PJ to the bus stop and brought KP to school.
But before any of that happened, I was up and dressed, had kid’s clothes laid out, breakfast made, kids eating at the table, the dog fed and out, backpacks packed and while I was eking out my last few minutes at home by emptying the dishwasher, I heard the following at the kitchen table:
CT: Dad is doing everything today.
KP: I know, he’s even bringing me to school.
PJ: AND walking me to the bus stop. He is doing EVERYTHING!!!!!
I stop in my tracks with wet dish in hand and look over at the kitchen computer. There he is, sitting just two feet away from the kids in his underwear and a sweater, Twittering.
Yes, HE is doing everything!

There are so many Christmas stories to share, I’m not really sure where to start. So…we’ll start a few days before Christmas.
We needed a little something to do, so I told the kids I would take them to see Santa. Thinking by 3:30 pm all the littles would be home taking an afternoon nap and we could just breeze right in and lay it on down for Santa.
Well, not exactly. There was eerily NO ONE in line but swarms of people everywhere. So we walked up to the two Santa gate keepers at the head table. Quickly we find out that there was a 5 1/2 hour wait. When asked when the best time to see Santa would be, gate keeper number one says to me, “Well, that would be November 15!” I almost kicked her in the teeth, smart ass, happy holidays, whore. Oh goodness, did I just say that, sorry I digress.
We (ok…I) come to determine that Santa is so not worth that, so I gave them each a quarter to put in the gumball machine and the nod to take a quick tour through Build A Bear first.
We zip through the store and hit the wall of gumballs. I realize KP is digging through his filled pockets (there are always treasures in there) to get at his quarter and there is something blocking his fat little fist from making it to the bottom. He pulls something out, something I have never seen before.
When questioned about it, his first instinct is to lie, tell me it’s his, he found it, he brought it from home, some strange man in a red suit gave it to him. After a few more questions he comes clean and tells me he lifted it from Build A Bear. Swift, fast and undetected…it is truly a gift and not a good one (he does it at preschool all the time, we now pat him down before he leaves).
This photo is us marching him back into the store so he can return stolen goods (see right hand).
I Love Lucy!
PJ’s 10th birthday came 3 1/2 years early.
May I introduce to you, the newest member of our pack….Lucy the standard poodle (just in case you were wondering).

Typically, during Halloween and after, I lay down the law on candy consumption. They can have so many pieces Halloween eve and then I dole the rest of it out, one by one, until around Easter.
This year we had a free for all. Friday through Sunday they got to eat candy whenever and how much they wanted. No questions asked.
What was funny to me was that they actually only ate what they could and then put it aside. There were no maddening questions posed every two minutes about when the next time would be that they could possibly get their chocolate smudged fists on some more candy, they just took it.
And today, it’s gone. It was shipped off to PJ’s school for their Fall Festival.
No questions asked, they know it is gone but ohhhhhh what a sweet few days it was.

Adam thought it would be fun to take a trip to the Humane Society yesterday. So the entire family packed into the van and headed off.
The ground rules were laid, WE WILL NOT BE TAKING A DOG HOME WITH US! Everyone agreed and we headed in.
There were lots of dogs there yesterday and lots of people looking at the dogs. Big dogs, small dogs, black dogs, white dogs and there was one dog in particular that barked and jumped at CT whenever he walked by, that was a little disturbing for him and he did not want to take that one home.
Of course, PJ fell in love, with Hawk. Hawk is a 7 year old dog with barely any teeth left. He is so ugly cute you did not want to leave him there. He even would start to cry whenever PJ tried to to walk away. So she sat on the floor the entire time, right by his side, petting him and talking to him and letting him know there is love in this world for him.
We had him taken out of his main stall and played with him for a little bit. The drama was mounting, all three kids wanted him, they already loved him and saw him playing in the house with them. He knew how to sit and roll over and get belly rubs by six little hands.
But when you stood back and saw them together, Hawk wasn’t all there. He didn’t love my kids like he needed to. The kids didn’t see it, the emotions ran too high.
So we walked away. PJ being held by Adam, sobbing.
My guess is PJ is not going to need to wait until she’s 10 to get a dog. We just need to find the right one.

Is what KP asked me this morning, while I was sobbing in the Target parking lot on my cell phone, while retelling what happened at my dad’s oncologist visit to Jennifer.
It has hit. The hammer has come down. There is another change.
My dad’s psa levels are on the rise again, along with increased bone pain and stability. The news, and what my father has dreaded most “you now need chemo”, in order to help his metastasized prostate cancer, has come to roost. His doctor told us today, after hormone therapy and then another drug of choice have both worked for a bit and failed, that chemo is next. And he has wanted NOTHING to do with it since this whole ordeal began.
As I found out today, to my dad, chemo = death. His doctor told him that it is not the chemo that is going to kill him, it’s the disease. So do what you can. And with those words alone, the tide shifted slightly.
Oh I’m not here to tell you he’s happy about this next step, but he is opening the door and knows there is not much choice (I think the doctor said it best, your choice is this or Hospice) but to walk through it.
So today, after the tears had fallen and the news had sunk in a little deeper, we did what we do best, we went out to relish the sunshine, get an ice cream cone and enjoyed each others company.
And then, he asked Adam to shave his head.
